Another 21 MacLean titles banned! |
Grim news for Alistair MacLean fans! American DCMA sheriffs in a Christmas day message to eBookTrove-dot-com declare, 'I hereby demand that you act expeditiously to remove or disable access to (the 21 MacLean titles).' It's very bad new for us all, of course. It's yet another erosion of our democratic rights, as ever. I buy a paperback or hard cover book and I can give it to whoever I like.
I buy a paperback or hard cover book and I can give it to whoever I like. I bought these ebooks and I should be able to give them to whoever I like. US law says no.
Similarly I bought these ebooks and I feel I should be able to give them to whoever I like. US law says no. And, very interestingly, the titles that get banned on eBookTrove-dot-com are not from struggling authors. It is almost always the books of the very well heeled. You won't need me to name them because the site is littered with the unfair DCMA tag. Of course, we see our democratic rights being snatched away every day, and it is doubly painfully obvious when we take a flight to anywhere. Our waterbottles are taken from us and dumped, to mention just one nonsense, and when we get into No Man's Land, is it coincidence that the price of small bottles of water is higher than anywhere else in the kingdom? Have you ever heard of little water bottles being used by terrorists? So on Christmas Day, dear Mr Eraj Siddiqui, of San Mateo, California, is back demanding this host of books be no longer available here. This is in addition to the two novels banned to our e-readers just before Christmas. Those two books - Athabasca and Bear Island - will have to be unlinked, too. Well, some of us are celebrating Christmas with our friends and families. When we return to work next week, the books will be unlinked and the site will confirm. Very sorry, readers. But the titles are available until then if you want to see what the fuss is about. However, although every effort has been made to meet the legal demands, I'm unable to get them all removed today. So tomorrow - Saturday - very sadly and reluctantly, these titles will go. I am not pleased, I confess. If I am allowed to buy a book and give it away, why should it be any different when it's in electronic format? Because, the greedy will say, I am giving away more than one copy. But surely the counter is that no-one has made the slightest effort to 'produce' any of these electronic copies. The publisher isn't paying the printer for more copies. No human is doing anything to produce an electronic reproduction. Take away the electronic gadgetry and there is no duplicate. Ebooks boost book salesAnd not a penny is made by eBookTrove. This is my hobby. I pay for it all. There is no monetary reward and nor do I look for any. People come here and taste a book and if they like it, they go off to buy it. Ebooks boost the sales of good hard copy books. They do not reduce the numbers. Still with additional staff brought on tomorrow, the offending titles will be removed. Apologies, eReaders. It's the law, even though we know what's said of bad laws. Thanks for visiting eBookTrove-dot-com
