Go on, admit it! You've never read this brilliant Christmas novel |
Announce to your people in the office, or at school, or in the shop, 'Christmas! Don't talk to be about Christmas. I've had it up to here with Christmas!' What can you guarantee that each of them will say? 'Scrooge!' loud and clear. Everybody knows the main character of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. But how many have read the excellent novel?
I've watched just about every version of the story on the TV and in the cinema. It was only when I read the book that I realised that by getting a visual representation I was missing so much ...
If you take a guess, you'll probably say, 'Not one of them.' You're probably right. Everyone knows the story, or of the story, and they know the chief character's name. Scrooge. But, extraordinarily, of the vast percentage of our species who know of the book and Scrooge, very, very few have read it. Have you? It is a great story, well written, wonderfully told. I Googled to look at one or two of the million who must have read the story. The results certainly appear to confirm that not many people in this century have read it. Here's one fan whose views are recorded on Amazon. 'I never realised that Dickens was such a good writer. I've watched just about every version of the story on the TV and in the cinema. It was only when I read the book that I realised that by getting a visual representation I was missing so much. ... I never understood that Dickens could be so funny. An Excellent book!'
